Redfield Farm explores the paradox between peoples' professed beliefs and their actions. The main characters, Ann and Jesse Redfield, brother and sister, are birthright Quakers living in a small Quaker enclave in Bedford County, PA. When Jesse becomes a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Ann enlists as his trusted lieutenant. Together they lie, sneak, masquerade and defy their way past would-be enforcers of the hated Fugitive Slave Law. Their dedication to the cause inevitably leads to complicated relationships with their fellow Quakers, pro-slavery neighbors and the fugitives themselves. Quakers are non-violent yet Ann and Jesse find themselves confronted with violence at every turn. Ann Redfield's strength is derived from her faith and her determination to live her life as testament to the true meaning of Quaker beliefs. Redfield Farm is a tale of compassion, dedication and love steeped in the details of another time but resonant with implications for today's world.
