OBJEKT South Africa

ENGLISH BARN WITH RACING SPIRIT • The stone barn, built within the grounds of a country home in the Cotswolds, UK, serves as an executive suite and a place to house a classic car collection. The designer at Splinter Works was commissioned to plan the layout and design custom-made furniture to fulfil the many functions required of the space.

MERCATO CENTRALE DI FIRENZE • Just a stone’s throw from the famous cathedral of Florence – the Duomo – another monument has been restored to its former splendour: the 140-year old Mercato Centrale (central market). It has been transformed into a prime culinary destination. On the ground floor, a huge variety of fresh produce as found in a traditional market setting, is on sale. But on the first floor, a tip-top Italian culinary paradise has been created. It was an initiative of Umberto Montano, a well-known catering entrepreneur (Alle Murate and Caffè Italiano) and Florentine by adoption. The redevelopment project was handled by the renowned architecture studio Archea Associati of Florence.

Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici at the Mercato Centrale

PALAZZO ANTINORI-ALDOBRANDINI • Giraldi Associates Architects have relocated their headquarters in Florence inside the palazzo Antinori-Aldobrandini in a 600 m2 space. Plasters and frescoes combine here perfectly with the fresh and modern design, creating a workplace that is truly unique.

Horst P. Horst photographer of style • He was an icon in the world of photography, style and fashion: the German photographer Horst P. Horst (1906-1999) whose work influenced generations of taste-makers. A beautiful definitive retrospective exhibition of his work will be on display at the V&A in London. The exhibition, opening in September 2014, will include 250 photographs spanning six decades, shown alongside 1930s couture garments and contextual film material.

Illy – live happily

natural light in osaka • House for Installation, is a renovated house located in Osaka, Japan, transformed into a minimalist atelier and residence for artists. Simplicity, flexibility and elegant use of light define the living and working spaces, an abstract setting for calmness, meditation and creativity.

ECO CHIC IN THE DUTCH POLDER • “My world revolves round eco chic: the balance between sustainability and a wealth of homely atmosphere. It’s a ‘liveable’ world in terms of comfort and functionality. It’s a world of sustainability too, the challenge being manage that aspect in the least obvious way.” The Dutch interior designer Robert Kolenik demonstrates what this actually entails in his show interior at the premises of Maretti, the lighting specialists, in a big polder in the Netherlands.

STUDIO CITY'S ARCHITECTURAL PLEASURE SURE DO LOVE YOU • Studio City, just over the Hollywood Hills, is a suburban neighbourhood. The architecture is more conservative than bold. That’s why the house belonging to Len Peltier and Patrick Clifton is particularly distinctive, despite the greenery that largely conceals it. The couple joined forces with the architect Jim Schmidt to create, on the site of an old ranch-type house, a modern setting framed on three sides by stacked rectangular volumes surrounded by a garden filled with primarily indigenous plants.

salone della creatività 491 degrees design

interior inspired by the arts • Unlike many of the neighbouring architectural statements, this house is built on a manageable scale. The chief components defining the interior would seem to be art and music....
